Here’s your chance to get to up close and personal with some of the world’s top drivers ahead of the Gumtree World Rallycross of South Africa at Killarney International Raceway on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 November.

Get revved up for the most exciting weekend on Cape Town’s motorsport calendar with the World Rallycross Parade in the V&A Waterfront at 11am on Thursday, 22 November, when a convoy of World Rallycross Supercars blasts off from behind the Table Bay Hotel, through the streets of the Warterfront to the Amphitheatre, next to the Big Wheel.

This is not a conventional parade, however, with the cars crawling along at little more than walking pace while the drivers wave to the spectators. The only way to get 600 horsepower out of a two-litre turbo four is to screw down the wastegate and boost it to within an inch of its life, which is how they can accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in less than two seconds.

That’s quicker than a Formula One car – and almost four times faster than a VW Golf GTI!

The other side of the coin is that World Rallycross Supercars don’t run well at low revs (some of them won’t run at all!) and they have very limited steering lock, which means that the only way to get them around a tight corner is to throw them sideways.

So this is likely to be one of the most intense parades you’ve ever seen, with half a dozen evil-tempered little racing cars sliding through the streets of the Waterfront, spitting, growling and making all sorts of rude noises, while the drivers concentrate on keeping them on the straight and  narrow.

They won’t be doing much waving until they get to the Amphitheatre.

Then you’ll get the opportunity to meet 2017 and 2018 World Rally champion Johan Kristoffersson, his Team PSRX Volkswagen team-mate Petter Solberg (World Rallycross champion in 2014 and 2015 and the only driver yet to win FIA world titles in two different motorsports, having won the World Rally Championship in 2013) as well as nine-times World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb, known among rally fans in his native France as “Le Patron” (the boss).

Also in attendance will be Audi team-mates and rivals for second place in the 2018 championship  Mattias Ekstrom and Andreas Bakkerud, just four points apart going into the final round of the 2018 season. How do they cope with the pressure?

“We have been fair all season long, said Bakkerud. “We have been hard, like we have always been to each other and we are here to go flat out.

“We will do like we always do and let the best Audi win.”

Also locked in a fierce (sibling) rivalry are Peugeot team-mates and brothers Timmy and Kevin Hansen. Timmy is sixth in the standings with 177 points and Kevin is eighth on 128; with a maximum of 30 points on offer at Killarney International Raceway, that’s not about to change – which won’t stop Kevin from trying to finish ahead of big brother Timmy in Cape Town.

Nevertheless, the driver most fans are keenest to meet is Cape Town’s own Ashley Haigh-Smith, the only South African entry in the 2018 Gumtree World Rallycross of South Africa. He’ll be competing in the second-tier RX2 class in a Ford Fiesta belonging to Finnish outfit SET Promotion, in the place of Simon Syversen, who has opted to focus his preparation for 2019.

So if you’ve always wanted a super-quick signature scrawled on some intimate part of your body, be sure to bring a permanent marker.
