29 Nov RACE PREVIEW – CMF b10/11December 2021
HISTORIC RACING WITH A DIFFERENCE AT KILLARNEY’S CAPE MOTORSPORT FESTIVAL!
The good old days at Killarney are back, with the Cape Motorsport Festival presented by the City of Cape Town and G+A Motorsport on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 December.
The two-day Motorsport Festival will feature the Cape 9 Hour, the final round of the 2021 South African Endurance Series, plus invitation races for four categories of cars built before 1986.
Friday 10 December will consist of practice, qualifying and one race in each historic category during the afternoon.
Saturday 11 December will feature a second race for each historic category in the morning, before the start of the 2021 Cape 9 Hour at 12 noon, which will run into the night to finish at 9:00pm.
And for spectators, we “go back 50 years” with a gate fee of just two rand per person! Spectators at sporting events are limited to 2000 people so pre-purchase your ticket from the admin block at Killarney to avoid disappointment – contact our office at info@wpmc.co.za or (021) 557-1639 during office hours for more details.
Killarney has spacious, wide open spectator areas with plenty of room for social distancing, where you can picnic or braai while you watch the racing.
Please note that in terms of Government Gazette 45329 of 15 October 2021 and MSA General Circular 11 of 2021, spectators must show proof of vaccination before being admitted to the premises and no alcohol may be brought on to the premises or consumed during the event by any persons, including spectators.
Entries for this national championship nine-hour endurance race include 2020 winner Franco Scribante, who will share a Volkswagen Polo GTi SupaCup with Jason Campos, the Stradale Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO with Tschops Sipuka and Xolile Letlaka sharing the hot seat, as well as the Stradale Porsche 997 GT3 Cup of Charl Arangies and Arnold Neveling, and Killarney’s own Harp Motorsport Ginetta Ginetta G57, to be driven by Craig Jarvis, ultimate lap record holder Stuart White and British driver Shaun Pendrigh.
Add to those the Harp Pilbeam MP84 of Francis Carruthers and Polo Cup hotshot Jurie ‘Umpie‘ Swart, at least one more Porsche 997 GT3, a couple of Ligier JS53 sports racers, no less than 15 thundering four-litre V8 Lexus-powered Backdraft Cobra replicas and more than a few highly-tuned ‘hot hatches’ – and you have a recipe for nine hours of unforgettable, drama-filled racing.
All historic cars are welcome for the pre-86 categories, whether HTP-registered or not, including replicas, retro-classics and single-seaters; the organisers have also made provision for cars built after 1986 that honour the spirit of the event, by invitation.
The entries for the pre-86/invitation races will be split 50/50 into two groups on qualifying lap times to create two categories, in addition to a special ‘big banger’ pre-86/invitation category for cars with eight or more cylinders and a fourth pre-86/invitation category for single-seater racing cars.
Drivers already entered in the ‘V8 and more’ category include Willie Hepburn, back at Killarney for the first time in many years with the same monster V8 Opel Record that he raced back in the day, taking on Gqeberha’s Rudolph de Vos and his rapid Chevy CanAm, and Colin Ellison’s 1964 ‘Thunderbolt’ ford Fairlane – not to mention former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Jan Lammers in a classic MGB V8.
The single-seater entry list features Lammers again, this time in a Hawke DL17 sponsored by a notorious Amsterdam night spot, and WPMC President Greg Mills in the formidable 280km/h Team Africa Le Mans Sana-Buick Formula 5000, last driven in anger in the support race at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix.
