VW POLO CUP SHOWDOWN AT CAPE MOTORSPORT FESTIVAL

The season finale of the national one-make Volkswagen Polo Cup series at Killarney, the sprint-racing highlight of the Cape Motorsport Festival presented by the City of Cape Town and G+A Motorsport this weekend, gives top contender, Killarney’s own Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart a huge home-ground advantage – but also puts a target on the tailgate of his Autohaus Alpine Polo.

The Polo Cup title fight boils down to a showdown between championship leader Leyton Fourie and local hero Swart, with just 17 points in it after Swart won both previous races in his rivals’ Zwartkops backyard last time out.

Third placed Gauteng racer Arnold Neveling is also still in with a mathematical title chance, while KwaZulu-Natal driver Clinton Bezuidenhout sits fourth in the points ahead of Jozi youngsters Jayden Els and Nathi Msimanga.

Swart will have at least three Cape drivers alongside him on his home Killarney grid in the shape of 2021 regulars and multiple SA karting champions, Charl Visser and Tate Bishop, and Giordano Lupini.

Expect fireworks, starting with qualifying on Friday morning – an ideal opportunity for motorsport photography, which is often difficult under race conditions. Then, after the lunch break on Friday, racing gets under way with the Polo Cup headlining the programme just after 6:00pm.

Saturday morning will feature a second race for each sprint category in the morning, starting at 8:40am and finishing with the very last Polo Cup race of the 2021 season, shortly after 10:00am. If, as expected, there are still championship positions to be decided it will be all to play for; anything could happen and probably will.
