07 Aug OBITUARIES – 29 JULY 2023
MINUTE OF SILENCE IN MEMORY OF ABSENT FRIENDS
The circuit fell silent as the Killarney family paid tribute at Round 7 of the Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors and Smile 90.4 FM on Saturday 29 July to three outstanding members who recently passed away.
DAVE MALAN
For more than a decade Dave Malan was our very own Stig, our unflappable, ultra-smooth pace car driver, leading the field in cars ranging from little family hatchbacks to the fire-breathing five-litre Jaguar F Type. It says much for his skill and his smooth driving style that dealers were always willing to provide Killarney with pace cars when they knew Dave would be doing the driving.
He was also made an honorary life member of the WPMC for his extraordinary contribution to motorsport at Killarney and served for a number of years as Vice-Chairman of the MSA Regional Committee under the chairmanship of Brian Jeffries.
He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed at Killarney; our thoughts and our prayers are with Wendy and the family in this sad time.
JOHAN ‘JAYBEE’ PRETORIUS
Johan ‘JayBee’ Pretorius was instrumental in the creation of the Fine Cars section at Killarney, where he competed in his BMW 2002 for 27 years – which is thought to be a South African motorsport record for the longest continuous car/driver combination.
Jaybee was also a motorsport photographer of note. He began taking motorsport photographs at Kyalami as a teenager in 1965 and many of his images have appeared in prestigious histories of both Killarney and Kyalami.
He was made an Honorary Life Member of the WPMC for his exceptional service to the Club, and was also honoured by Motorsport South Africa earlier in 2023 with a Special Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to South African motorsport.
His passing leaves a huge hole in the fabric of the WPMC, one that will never be filled; our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
ALAN RUSSO
It was with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of longstanding WPMC member Alan Russo on the morning of Thursday 29 June, while he was breakfasting with friends.
Our thoughts and prayers are with their friends and family.
