RIP MONICA DLAKAVU

It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Monica Dlakavu, for many years the lady in charge of the kitchen at Killarney’s admin block, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Monica was much more than a tea lady – she kept the kitchen, the boardroom and offices spotless, prepared and served meals for the VIP guests in the Adrian Pheiffer lounge, did the shopping for supplies and generally kept the staff on their toes.

Known for her wicked and occasionally caustic sense of humour, Monica did not suffer fools gladly – and heaven help you if you left a mess in her kitchen – but she was always ready to help, and she knew where everything was, not just in the kitchen but throughout the building.

She bore her long illness with grace and fortitude, and that, along with her big, open-faced smile, is how she will be remembered at Killarney. We miss you already, Monica.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this sad time.

Thanks to Terri Philander for the picture, which so beautifully captures Monica’s characteristic smile.
