THE SKY’S THE LIMIT AT THE KILLARNEY MOTOR SHOW POWERED BY Kfm 94.5

The sky’s the limit at the 2018 Killarney Motor Show powered by Kfm 94.5, on Sunday 4 November at the Killarney International Raceway. There will be demo flights throughout the day by radio-controlled model aircraft, flown by Michael and Clinton Basson of Micton Hobbies in Somerset West with Dirk Coetzee as safety officer.

Ultimate is a highly aerobatic semi-scale model of a Pitts S2 biplane with a 2.6 metre wingspan, powered  by a twin-cylinder 150cc two-stroke engine with built-in oil injection, so it can make smoke on demand, ‘just like the real thing’. Capable of pulling high G forces, it is an astonishingly agile stunt performer.

By contrast, the semi-scale Eurofighter model is all about speed. It’s 2.2 metres long with a 1.5 metre wingspan and has a jet turbine engine delivering up to 15kg of thrust. The model weighs 15 kilograms with a full load of 5.1 litres of Jet A1 fuel, which means it is very nearly capable of going straight up without stalling.

Top speed is around 300km/h but at full throttle it will burn through five litres of fuel in nine minutes, so it normally ‘cruises’ at about 210km/h and the Bassons fly it for no more than eight minutes, so as to ensure a safe margin of fuel for landing.

The model aircraft are scheduled to fly at 10.10am and again at 1.15pm – another good reason to be there early at Cape Town’s biggest and most hands-on motoring festival, which includes test drives in new cars, rides on new dual-purpose motorcycles at the Adventure City off-road area (or get down and dirty on your own bike) and rides in new Isuzu vehicles on the Reeds 4×4 Track.

There will be breath-taking motorcycle stunts and Freestyle Motocross, drifting displays by SA champion Jason Webb, live bands, a fun fair, snake shows, stalls selling automotive memorabilia, car bling, accessories and scale models and no fewer than five food courts offering a huge variety of food and liquid refreshment.

The Killarney Motor Show powered by Kfm 94.5 will be open from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 4 November. Book at Computicket (https://online.computicket.com/web/event/killarney_motor_show/1261761387/604118204) or pay at the gate; entry is R100 for adults, R50 for Scholars under 16 and free for children under 12.
