KEEPING ON TRACK

KEEPING ON TRACK

80 YEARS OF CAPE MOTORING HIGHLIGHTS

Derek Stuart-Findlay

Crankhandle Club resident historian Derek Stuart-Findlay traces the history of motorsport and motoring at the Cape of Good Hope from the end of the Second World War to the present day in his richly illustrated new book ‘Keeping on Track’.

This is not, however, simply a record of motorsport, of who won what in what – although there is plenty of that type of detail for the racing enthusiasts.

This 160 page large format hard-cover volume tells the stories behind the race wins, highlights the personalities involved and the wonderful places they found to race each other, on wetlands in the far southern peninsula, industrial areas and on hay-baled street circuits – places where racing would never be allowed today!

It speaks of giant overland adventures through Africa that sometimes began and often ended in the Mother City. There are sections on unusual vehicles and on the far-sighted engineers who built the roads we enjoy driving on today – especially the passes such as Bains and Du Toit’s Kloof.

This is a book to be savoured, to be read a chapter at a time, to explore just as the author explores the side roads along the route of his 80 year narrative.
