26 Jun “RATHER PLAY GOLF THAN DRIVE ONE” – SEE SAREL THE SUPERVAN IN ACTION IN HIS MOST HATED CAR AT ROUND 5 of POWER SERIES THIS SATURDAY!
Johan Evertse was Sarel van der Merwe’s teammate when they competed in the South African Rally Championship with the Southern Sun VW Golf A2 GTi Synchro 2.0.
Unfortunately, Johan Evertse recently passed away at the age of 71.
As you’ll notice in the photos, Sarel was not impressed with the Golf.
He had a sticker on the back of the car during the NGK Rally in the Cape that read: “Rather play golf than drive one.”
In his own book, he describes it as the “crappiest Golf in the world,” after the car had to retire from 14 rallies in a row due to mechanical failures.
The car was later used by Jerry Bailey and Brian Hoskins in the Western Province Rally Championship.
After that, it went to Shaun Jones, but reliability always remained a problem.
Now, Shaun Jones has fully restored it, and Sarel will, for the first time in 34 years, cross paths with it again on Saturday, 28 June only at Round 5 of Killarney Power Series.
Without a doubt, his most hated rally car.
