14 Jan PLEASE HELP US TO HELP OUR NEIGHBOURS!

On Friday 9 January, a devastating fire swept through the neighbouring settlement of Du Noon, immediately north of Killarney.
Fanned by a strong south-east wind, the flames destroyed 632 homes, leaving 2604 people with little more than the clothes on their backs. These are our neighbours: more than that, some of them are family. At least three of our Killarney marshals lost their homes and all their possessions in the blaze.
As many as half of those affected are children, about to start a new school year. Think about that for a moment: they will walk into class with no uniforms, no books, no stationery, no pens, no pencils – none of the essentials that other children take for granted.
Please stand outside your home this evening and try to imagine what it would be like if you went to work one day and came home to nothing but ashes. What then? Who would you turn to?
Please help us to help our neighbours
We’re not asking for money – we’re appealing for more tangible assistance, in the shape of school stationery, school shoes, spare home appliances such as kettles and toasters, plates, cutlery, cookware, blankets and bedding.
A garage at Killarney has been made available as a collection site; please bring whatever you can to the Admin Tower at Killarney, as soon as you can. Peter Luhanga, our media partner at Du Noon’s community newspaper Iliso Labantu, will ensure that it gets to the families who need it most.
We thank you in advance for your kind contribution.
