27 Feb KILLARNEY CARNIVAL #1 – SATURDAY 29 FEBRUARY 2020 – PREVIEW
SHORT CIRCUIT, RALLYCROSS AND DRAGS AT KILLARNEY CARNIVAL
For the first time, Killarney Carnival 1 on Saturday 29 February presents Short-Circuit Racing in the morning and Rallycross in the afternoon on the ‘Half Main’ – as well as MSA Drag Racing on the Main Straight all day.
Short-Circuit Racing uses the section of Killarney International Raceway from the exit of KFM Corner to the exit of Rose Sweep, with a tight left-hander to complete a lap of about one kilometre with no straights to speak of.
The programme includes 150cc motorcycles, Super Singles, Motards, Super Karts and Formula M motorcycle-engined racing cars, and the best part is that you can see the entire circuit from almost anywhere on the stands.
Rallycross is run within the same arena as Short Circuit, but includes two dirt sections. Open to rally cars, stock cars and Clubman racers, it’s nevertheless dominated by the unlikeliest class of all – the 3 Series BMW sedans of the E36 Cup!
MSA Drag Racing is open to street-cars as well as competition machines, including monsters such as Suspect, Shaheen Barmania’s monster Chev Lumina Ute, its rear wheels driven by a thundering V8 engine of well over six litres, topped by two gynormous turbochargers and delivering (at a conservative estimate) more than 2000 horsepower.
Equally spectacular is Shaun Zurich’s Honda Civic, reputedly the fastest naturally aspirated front wheel-drive drag racer in Africa, powered by a highly tuned four-cylinder Honda engine without forced induction or chemical assistance.
The day will also feature street-legal supercars such as Nissan GTR’s running the quarter-mile (402 metres) in less than 10 seconds – but the quickest of all are the Superbikes, led by Reece ‘Buddy’ Robertson’s Suzuki at 8.5 seconds and 250km/h.
Pack more excitement than ever before into a day at Killarney at only R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12. Gates open at 7:00am, racing begins at 9:00am.
