RACE REVIEW – DRAG RACING – 15 APRIL 2023

OLD-SCHOOL VW’S RULE THE STRIP AT KILLARNEY DRAGS

Old-school Volkswagen Golfs ruled the strip at Killarney’s MSA Drag Racing event on Saturday 15 April, taking the top three places in Class OS with Scott Wyness’ Caddy bakkie posting the quickest time of the day by a four-wheeled vehicle, a superb 9.31944 second pass at 239.73km/h, followed by Jody van Schoor’s Golf 1 at 9.71793 seconds and 235.94km/h, and Sherwin Williams’ similar Golf 1 (10.74911 seconds at 222.35km/h).

Shaun Zurich’s superbly-prepared Honda Civic saved some Japanese pride by taking Class OA naturally aspirated cars with a best effort of 9.41722 seconds (the second-best time of the day by a car!) at 226.95km/h. Second was Shaamiel Shah (Nissan Sentra (12.11882 seconds/185.84km/h) and third went to Aldo Viljoen’s Golf 1 on 12.45045 seconds and 177.06km/h.

But nothing on four wheels could match the Class MA motorcycles, led by Thaakier Abrahams (BMW S1000RR) who came tantalisingly close to breaking into the eights with a run of 9.02812 seconds, just ahead of the similar BMW’s of Muraad Moerat (9.30808 seconds at 239.47km/h) and Irvinne Bruinders (9.61370 seconds/235.75km/h).

The Class MB bikers – all on S1000 RR’s – were just as quick, with Ricardo Visagie leading the charge at 9.11677 seconds and 248.77km/h, ahead of Mogamad Abrahams (9.17489 seconds and 251.04km/h) and David Wilson (9.26934 seconds/247.75km/h).

Josh Maart took Class MC for modified street-bikes on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 with a 9.51234 second pass at 241.32km/h, narrowly edging out determined rookie Damian Barlow (Honda CBR 1000RR) on 9.89320 seconds and 236.45km/h. Class MD for 600cc streetbikes was a Honda benefit, with Daniel Grové’s CBR 600RR (10.72590 seconds at 209.38km/h) well clear of Tohir Allie’s Kawasaki ZX-6R (11.12313 seconds at 191.47km/h).

Class 6S for force-fed six-cylinder cars was led by Naeem Logday and his Toyota Supra with a best effort of 11.04899 seconds at 204.62km/h, just ahead of Tashendra Jamokeeah’s Nissan GTR R35, which posted a disappointing 11.21997 seconds at 204.31km/h, and Jerome Michaels in his Audi RS3, who posted an 11.40617 second pass at 198.16km/h.

Class 4S was dominated by all-wheel drive cars, with Corbin Rass in his Volkswagen Golf 7R (10.57728 seconds/218.77km/h) and Eugene Minnaar’s Audi S3 (11.36099 seconds and 197.82) well ahead of Niaz Khan’s Honda Civic Turbo on 13.54786 seconds and 134.51km/h.

Class 4A was a more conventional affair, as W Willemse and his Honda Ballade broke into the 12’s by the narrowest possible margin (12.99915 seconds at 174.44km/h!) to see off E Simonse’s Nissan 1400 bakkie (13.15615 seconds/166.15km/h).
