KILLARNEY’S TIME ATTACK DELIVERS THE MAGIC

Killarney’s Time Attack powered by MasterDrive on Women’s Day, Wednesday 9 August, delivered the magic in full measure for competitors, pit crews and spectators alike, with just enough drama to make it interesting.

The weather gods smiled, the track surface was hot enough to give decent grip and the times soon came down to around the one-minute mark in almost all the categories.

As expected, the Racing & GT cars filled the top slots, with Clinton Thorne’s winged monster Lotus 7 fighting it out with Josh Broome’s Spitfire Furniture Radical for Fastest Time of the Day. In the end, however, the honours went to Thorne with a time of 52.332 seconds, just 0.378sec quicker than Broome’s best effort of 52.710.

Nian du Toit’s BMW topped the Modified Saloon timesheets with a superb 55.236 second run, less than a second ahead of Brad Bodsworth’s Bad Bee 1098 which, in typical Ducati fashion, droned around the 1.9 kilometre Time Attack course sounding laid-back and lazy – and posted a best time of 55.962 seconds to top the two-wheeled timesheets!

Philip Booysen rounded out the top five in his Belfreeze Lotus Exige with a very creditable 57.236 second run.

Matthew van Niekerk’s Bulldog Racing SV650 (58.323 seconds) was sixth overall, second in the motorcycles and first in the combined STC 650 and SSP 300 category, followed by team-mate Quinton Weening’s Yamaha superbike at 59.772.

Billy Brink’s Nissan 350Z was the fastest Road Car on the day, in eighth overall with a best effort of 1:00.013 (and it must really have hurt to get that close to the one-minute barrier without breaking it!) although it should be noted that Brink was competing in the eight-cylinder category, so it’s a safe bet that his Zee no longer has its original V6 engine on board.

A surprise ninth overall was Hennie Bosman’s Classic pre-1980 Lotus 7 (1:00.044) with Junaid Hamid fourth in the Racing & GT Car category and 10th overall in his Tracktion Nissan 350Z.

Mention must also be made of Abigail Bosson, the fastest lady of the day at 1:03.443, the top SSP 300 rider, third in the combined STC 650 and SSP 300 category and 16th overall for the day out of more than 60 entries.
