16 Oct RIP DENNIS FOURIE

The name Fourie is synonymous with motorcycle racing at Killarney; there were four Fourie brothers – Keith, Anthony, Victor and Dennis, three of whom raced bikes with considerable success in the 1970s and ‘80s.
So it was with painful sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of the youngest Fourie, Dennis, on the morning of Wednesday 15 October, from complications following surgery.
Dennis was more than a talented motorcycle racer; although he never raced cars, he was a very quick driver and regularly outpaced his nephews when he joined them as the third driver in endurance karting events.
Above all else, however, he was a gifted artisan who could turn his hand to anything. He and his brother Keith at one stage ran a bike shop, D & K Motorcycles, and Dennis later opened a workshop in Southfield where he built and ran race cars, made furniture and even sold and serviced golf carts.
The family always said he could solve any problem. On the last evening of his life his drip was causing him considerable discomfort, so he called a nurse to bring some micropore and instructed her precisely where the drip tube needed to be taped!
Then he was able to relax and slip quietly away in the early hours of the next morning. It was so typical of the man that he and his late wife Glenda, seen with him in this photo, are probably enjoying a good chuckle now at our expense.
Our condolences go out to the extended Fourie family; the Killarney motorcycle fraternity will miss his ready smile and sense of fun.
