23 Sep STATEMENT FROM WPMC REGARDING EXTREME FESTIVAL INCIDENT
It is with deep sadness that the Western Province Motor Club (WPMC) confirms that a fatal accident occurred during the National Extreme Festival event on 19 September 2026.
The promoter and organiser of this event was “National Extreme Tour”, and took place under the auspices of Motorsport SA, and hosted by Killarney International Raceway.
Experienced Supercar racer Marcel Angel, 62, of Llandudno, was taking part in the first Extreme Supercar race of the day when he had a high-speed crash at the end of the back straight. Medical personnel and Race Officials were immediately on the scene, but Marcel tragically succumbed to his injuries.
We understand that three members of the public were slightly injured by flying debris during the incident but are expected to recover fully.
The rest of the Extreme Festival event was immediately cancelled out of respect for the Angel family.
Marcel was active in motorsport at Killarney since moving to Cape Town in 1993. He was truly
one of our own, a passionate racing driver of consummate skill. His celebrated racing career was marked with many accolades over the years, as the winner of multiple Regional and National championships in various racing disciplines. He was also the holder of national Protea Colours for SuperKart racing.
At this sensitive time it would be irresponsible for anyone, as well as the WPMC, to speculate as to the cause of the accident. To that end, we are confident that the investigating team will work tirelessly to get to the bottom of what may have contributed to this incident.
As the WPMC we therefore commit our full co-operation to the ongoing investigation.
We are also pleased to announce that the Investigating Team is being led by Steve Harding, the Western Cape Head of the Motorsport SA Safety Panel, with fellow Panel Member, Peet van der Walt.
The Western Province Motor Club is a long-standing Member of Motorsport South Africa, and is fully committed to, and compliant with, its Safety Protocols.
Since the safety of our competitors is paramount to the WPMC, the Management Committee of Killarney now awaits the Report of the Investigators, and look forward to any possible recommendations they may make to further enhance our Safety Measures.
A devoted father and husband, Marcel leaves his wife, Mica, four children, a stepson and two grandchildren.
We express our heartfelt condolences to Marcel’s wife, to his family, and his many friends in the automotive and racing fraternity during this difficult time.
