13 Jul TIMMY HANSEN WINS WORLD RALLYCROSS ESPORTS SERIES IN CLIFFHANGER FINALE

Cape Town – He did it in real life last year, and now in Esports! Reigning World Rallycross champion Timmy Hansen, who took the 2019 WRX title in a no-holds-barred final at Killarney International Raceway in November 2019, has won the inaugural FIA WorldRX Esports virtual championship.
After three rounds – at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi on 31 May, Hell in Norway on 21 June and Holjes in Sweden on 28 June – only 12 points separated the top three drivers. Timmy Hansen had 73 points, Tom Blomqvist 67 and Timmy’s younger brother Kevin was on 61; any one of the three could take the honours at the virtual Killarney on Sunday 12 July.
In the event, it was fast but erratic Shane van Gisbergen who won the fourth round of the series after a action-packed final race that saw championship leader Hansen pushed into the wall and out of contention. He finished fourth behind Van Gisbergen, Blomqvist and local hero, Capetonian endurance racer David Perel, with Jonathan Pailler fifth and last.
But that wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the championship, as Hansen finished the season on 97 points to Blomqvist’s 93, while Van Gisbergen superb final effort moved him up to third overall on 82 points.
RX Esports events include a mix of World Rallycross drivers and guest drivers from other motorsport disciplines, as well as Esports racers. The top 10 gamers compete in their own semi-finals and final.
