WHEN WILL MOTOR RACING EVENTS RETURN TO KILLARNEY?

WHEN WILL MOTOR RACING EVENTS RETURN TO KILLARNEY?

The short answer is that we simply don’t know.

Under the revised Level 3 Risk Adjustment Regulations announced by the president on 25 June, certain sports are permitted to resume, under very strict Covid-19 protocols and restrictions. Motorsport, however, is not one of them, so we are still waiting on clarity from the responsible government ministries.

In response to a number of queries from you, the Killarney motor racing family, we approached Motorsport South African to ask “What’s happening?”

“Formal submission has been made to government and we await a response,” came the reply from Chief Executive Adrian Scholtz, “ hopefully in the next few days.

“However, in terms of current government regulations no sport may take place in hotspots,” he added. “Therefore even if we get the green light to resume it will in all likelihood only be for activities outside of hotspots.”

SO WHAT CAN WE DO?

Under the Level 3 Emergency Automotive Regulations, testing and evaluation of road and racing vehicles is permitted on a closed circuit.

The Killarney Main Circuit is available for hire on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on a pre-arranged booking basis; no walk-ins will be permitted.

Wearing of face masks covering the nose and mouth at all times is required and when entering the premises you’ll be asked to have your temperature taken with a no-contact, infra-red thermometer.
You’ll also have to make a Declaration of Health; if you refuse, or if your temperature is above 37.5 degrees C you won’t be allowed in.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

As soon as the restrictions on large gatherings are lifted, both Western Province and Motorsport South Africa will start working on revised calendars to fit as much motorsport as we can into the rest of the year – but nobody knows when that will be.

WE THANK OUR MEMBERS, OUR SPONSORS, OUR STAFF AND THE EXTENDED FAMILY OF KILLARNEY MOTORSPORT FANS FOR THEIR UNWAVERING SUPPORT IN THIS VERY DIFFICULT TIME.
