The Western Province Motor Club Mancom, officials, staff and honoured guests gathered in the Adrian Pheiffer Lounge on the top floor of the Castrol Tower on the evening of Tuesday 28 July, for the annual Honours awards to those members and supporters who have rendered exceptional service to Killarney.
These included one very special award to a very special supporter. As WPMC Chairman and Executive Manager of Killarney Lance Jonas explained:
“The Edgar Hoal Memorial Trophy is one of the most prestigious honours that the Western Province Motor Club can bestow. This beautiful copper sculpture was created in 1967 as a memorial to the man who designed our circuit for the inaugural Cape Grand Prix in 1960.
“It has only been awarded 22 times in the 59 years since then, for exceptional services to the WPMC and above all, to motorsport.
“And tonight we are proud and privileged to bestow this accolade on our landlord, whose staff have stood behind us, supported us through the toughest of times and partnered with us in world-leading road safety initiatives.
“With grateful thanks and sincere appreciation, the Edgar Hoal Memorial Trophy is awarded to the City of Cape Town.”
HONOURS BADGES
Killarney could not be the multi-faceted venue that it is, with more than 150 motorsport, charity and road-safety events each year, without the unfailing efforts, largely unseen and unrewarded, of a very special group of people.
This year we turned the spotlight on some of the people who make big events at Killarney, possible, in particular the Killarney Motor Show, the biggest event of all.
Lance presented WPMC Honours Badges to:
BOB CORBETT, the Treasurer of the Multi Motor Club Secretariat, who has been a pillar of the Killarney Motor Show since its inception.
JEAN VAN WYK, who has for years been responsible for creating the vibe and the excitement of the High-Speed Arena at the Killarney Motor Show and, more importantly, putting in his own time and effort to make the logistics work, for this very complex facet of the Show.
DANIE VAN NIEKERK, the man behind one of the most exciting facets of the annual Killarney Motor Show. For years he has organized and led the all-day action in the Stunt Arena on the Main Straight, but what show visitors don’t see is the months of preparation that go into these thrilling stunts
That is what Danie was recognised for with this award; he was unable to attend, but his Honours badge was accepted by his wife and daughter on his behalf.
CORNICK BRITZ, the man behind the Fun Fair that is such a central feature of our big events, who provides the excitement of the day for children of all ages and who is always there for us whenever Marizca calls him on short notice and says, “We need rides…”
ROB ELOFF, who not only organizes the racing car and motorcycle displays at the annual Killarney Motor Show, as well as the judging for Best Stand that goes with it, but has also helped to create a new generation of motorsport heroes by founding the Eloff Racing Academy – on his own initiative and with his own funds – inspiring young people with his passion for racing and racing cars.
PAUL KELLY, our link to the MOTHS Motorcycle Association, who has been instrumental for many years in organizing one of our most important charity events, the fund-raiser for assisting cancer patients in need, first known as the Sunflower Fund and now the Flamingo/Peacock Project.

IAN LONG, who has been an official of the Western Province Motor Club for longer than most of us can remember, serving wherever he’s needed, and always willing to give of his own time for the committee meetings and background work that make events at Killarney possible.
